“If you show people how the waterfront impacts their quality of life, they will care for it.”
This is the driving philosophy behind Going Coastal ®, Inc., a nonprofit, educational and publishing organization formed to insure sustainable coastal living by raising awareness of the coast's immense value and importance of stewardship. We connect people and coastal resources by producing books, magazines and events that facilitate rediscovery of waterfront history, increase access, and make stewardships easy and fun.
Background
Going Coastal, Inc. was founded by Barbara La Rocco and Zhennya Slootskin, two women concerned with the evolving state of New York City's urban coasts, lack of awareness and participation by the public, and the inadequacy of current resources for enjoying and preserving the coastline. In order to address these needs, the founders set to create a tool that would serve as a primer to access, a guide to history and a connector between people and groups interested in sustainability of our urban coasts. The result of that effort is our US EPA award winning Going Coastal New York City Guide. In the process of our work we were very fortunate to form many partnerships and enduring collaborations. It was the two-year long fiscal sponsorship by the American Littoral Society that made not only the guide book a reality, but also facilitated Going Coastal's Inc. 501(c)(3) incorporation in December 2003. So, Going Coastal New York City Guide gave birth to the organization, and Going Coastal, Inc. nursed the book.
