Pumpout Boat
NEW FALL HOURS FRIDAY TO SUNDAY 10 AM TO 5 PM.
Going Coastal launches pumpout boat service for recreational boats operating in the area of Western Long Island Sound from Little Neck Bay to Eastchester Bay to Flushing Bay. The 21-foot pumpout boat christened “Eco Pal I” provides the service from May to October, usually Thursday to Monday, 11 am to 5 pm. The pump-outs are free to any pleasure boat.
“Eco Pal I” complements land-based units serving Western Long Island Sound. A pumpout safely removes sewage from a ships holding tank, preventing contamination of our local waters and aquatic life. The goal of the program is to protect the environment by reducing the potential for any boat sewage discharges in New York waters.
Boats are forbidden by state and federal law to dump untreated sewage into New York State waterways. Long Island Sound is currently under review by the EPA to be designated a No Discharge Zone, where the discharge of even treated marine waste is prohibited.
This service is provided free of charge. You can flag down the boat or make a reservation for a pumpout.
On the water, contact by marine radio: VHF Channel 71
Schedule by phone: (718) 475-6514 (leave a message)
Email: NYCPumpout@gmail.com
NOTE: The pumpout operators cannot board an unoccupied vesssels.
See Going Coastal’s Maps for a complete list of stationary pumpouts.
The pumpout boat has a completely closed pumping system that vacuums sewage to a 300-gallon holding tank below deck discharges to the municipal sewer line through a dockside pumpout station.
The boat is funded through a Clean Vessel Act grant provided by the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation with assistance from the Fund for the City of New York. Support for pumpout boat operations for the 2011 season is provided by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Long Island Sound Futures Fund and additional support from Hammonds Cove Marina and CUNY Kingsborough CC Maritime Technology Program.
